Short Bio Organization
ASA SpA is the water utility that manages the integrated water-cycle services (drinking water treatment and distribution, sewers and wastewater treatment) for about 373,000 inhabitants resident in 33 municipalities in Tuscany (Italy), including the costal area from Piombino to Livorno and the islands of Elba, Pianosa and Capraia.
The area served by ASA is highly attractive for summer tourists. In fact, the served populations range from 370 000 in winter to more than 1 000 000 in summer, so as to need highly flexible water infrastructure and operation and maintenance expertise.
In addition, the scattered population involves many small and decentralised treatment systems that are more than 70 in the whole area.
Wastewater treatment and reuse and reuse and possible use of alternative water sources (e.g. desalination) is a solution of choice for ASA that is technically evaluating these options both in Val di Cornia and in Elba island.
The international profile of ASA is proved by the co-organisation of the forthcoming International Water Association (IWA) conference on Water Challenges in XXI century.
Relation with HYDROUSA
As water utility that manages Mediterranean costs and islands, ASA will play a key role in the replicability and transferability work package concerning the islands the Tuscany archipelago. In addition the expertise of ASA concerning the water economics, pricing and the tariff for water services will be crucial to support the exploitation plan of HYDROUSA and evaluate the HYDROUSA water loops within the different economic and financial frameworks.
ASA will also contribute to the communication and dissemination activities of the project
