The island of Tinos is well known for its picturesque villages, the rich intangible culture and the modern & historical sites combining traditional & more modern tastes & initiatives.
Since antiquity, the island is popular for its abundant water, beside its winds, and that’s why is also known as HYDROYSA.
Throughout the years, the needs for water consumption are on a constant rise and the resources in constant decline. The linear approach from the stage of pumping to the techno-chemistry, the means of process and the conversion to waste is the dominant model.
In the town of Tinos, the needs for water are covered by desalination units (around 80%), while the seasonal fluctuation of population, the rise of construction works and the touristic units coupled with long periods without rains and the existence of “salty” resources, are drawing the focus on to the sustainability of the island. This is also a general case for consideration in the Mediterrenean region, where water shortage is a crucial issue.
Aiming to restore a sustainable reality in the Mediterrenean regions we designed HYDROUSA, a project which combines traditional & bio-mimical nature based solutions and proposes innovative ways to tackle the water scarcity by harnessing the principles of circular economy.
The programme has a bold presence in Greece counting more than 9 stakeholders such as universities, research institutions, Municipalities, SME’s and NGOs.
All application systems of HYDROUSA will be developed in three prototype Greek islands. (2 in Lesvos, 2 in Mykonos & 2 in Tinos).
On Monday, 24th of June, an induction to the programme by representatives of Impact Hub AThens & Alchemia Nova in collaboration with the Municipality of Tinos was held at the Old Town Hall of the Island.
This first gathering set the ground for the next steps of the project, with a co-creation workshop coming next in October 2019.
During the visit and the discussion after HYDROUSA team got to mingle with important stakeholders, collectives, ventures and individuals with whom further collaboration on the project’s model may be established and amplified on a social, environmental & economical level.
The designs of HYDROUSA’s application systems are currently finalized and pilots are already tested, while is estimated to run official by Summer 2020.
