Xavier Amores, director of the Catalan Water Partnership, participated in the 25th edition of the World Climate Summit COP25, which took place between December 2 and 13 in the IFEMA fairground in Madrid, organized by United Nations, the most important global event on climate change. EU representatives like Eva Revill also attended the event. Specifically, the CWP participated in the Green Zone panel with other clusters discussing industrial ecosystems and open innovation, and what role clusters may play in their contribution to the fight against climate change. Xavier Amores gave a talk focusing on the circular economy in the water sector, in which he presented the challenges in water
management and CWP projects to promote sustainability such as:
- HYDROUSA, a project of more than € 12M and 27 partners throughout Europe with the support of the H2020 program to apply the Circular Economy in the tourism sector of the Mediterranean, specifically in the Greek islands to close the water cycle, to generate energy as biogas and use sludge as a fertilizer. The CWP has the role of promoting the replicability of these technologies in the Mediterranean area.
- Simbaicat, an industrial symbiosis project in the water sector with the support of the Catalan Waste Agency to promote the use of waste by CWP companies as a resourcefor other companies in the cluster.
- Polifavi, Watertur, etc. as examples of a set of actions that, through cooperation between the water sector and other water intensive sectors such as the wine or tourism sectors, are achieving greater efficiency in the consumption of water, energy and chemicals, or the potential reuse of water.
It could also contextualize the need for these projects in the face of the advancement of desertification throughout the Mediterranean area, the high per capita water footprint in Spain and the impact and high water consumption of multiple sectors such as the food or tourism in periods of severe water scarcity.
