Short Bio Organization
Heliopolis University for Sustainable Development was inaugurated in 2012 by SEKEM Development Foundation with the aim to pioneer the introduction of the concepts and principles of sustainable development to its students and to the Egyptian community at large. The non-profit oriented university includes five faculties of Engineering, Pharmacy and Drug Technology, Business and Economics, Physical Therapy, and Organic Agriculture.
The degree programs offered at Heliopolis University address the concepts and theories of sustainable development through a multi-disciplinary holistic approach that integrates teaching, learning, research, and practice.
All students in Heliopolis University participate in the cross-faculty Core Program which presents arts, music, theater, languages and much more, striving to unlock creativity and innovation. The program further enriches the learning experience by focusing on sustainability and human development.
Additionally, Heliopolis University Center of Research for Sustainable Development aims to improve Egypt’s capacity to conduct, publish, and disseminate relevant social and scientific research in the areas of medicine, pharmacy, engineering, biodynamic agriculture, arts, and social sciences. Its demand-driven research is designed to meet the requirements of the community, the companies, and the country alike and builds on national and international collaboration. Relation with HYDROUSA
HUSD will be responsible for studying the soil conditions of the islands and determining the needs in terms of water, nutrients (both macro and micro), Food safety and pest control.
HUSD will be consulted for all sites in the following tasks: Guidance methodology for replication assessment, replication in Middle East and North African (MENA).
HUSD will help in various capacity building workshops in which it will utilise its significant expertise in sustainable agriculture and water management to train members of the consortium on methods of integrating the Circular water system.
HUSD will also contribute to the research on different business models and case studies for the financial sustainability of the project and its future replication and upscaling.
